Licensed Acupuncturist (L.Ac.)

Formal Education Requirements:
Successful completion of a three-year postsecondary training program or
acupuncture college that is ACAOM accredited or in candidacy status, or
which meets ACAOM standards.
Undergraduate Requirements: None.
Other Eligibility Requirements: Current, active NCCAOM certification as a diplomate in acupuncture and successful completion of a clean needle technique course approved by the NCCAOM. There is a grandparenting provision for individuals residing in Tennessee on the effective date of the statute and who have completed an approved apprenticeship or tutorial program that meets NCCAOM standards.
Reciprocity/Endorsement: An applicant who documents current state licensure in good standing in another state with substantially equivalent or higher standards may also be licensed.

Acupuncture is within the scope of practice of a medical doctor.
Chiropractors may practice acupuncture upon completion of 250 hours of acupuncture training and passing the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners Acupuncture Exam.
NOTE: Look for a physician with formal training in the practice of acupuncture. Acupuncture and Oriental medicine is an art and a science that takes years to master. While any licensed physician can stick needles into you, for a positive experience and results, find an acupuncturist with experience treating a similar condition (with acupuncture) to what you have.
