Nevada Laws & Details

Formal Education Requirements:  Completion of an accredited four-year program of study, or its equivalent, in Oriental medicine at a school or college of Oriental medicine which is approved by the board that includes completion of at least 2,800 hours of instruction, including not less than 2,500 didactic hours, for a student to have graduated before November 25, 2002; or completion of at least 3,000 hours of instruction, including not less than 2,500 didactic hours, for a student to graduate on or after November 25, 2002.  The program of study must include training or instruction in the subjects of acupuncture, moxibustion, herbology, Oriental physiology, Oriental pathology, Oriental diagnosis, tuina, biology, physics, chemistry, biochemistry, anatomy, Western physiology, Western pathology, Western diagnosis, pharmacology, laboratory and radiology.

Undergraduate Requirements:  Bachelor's degree.

Other Eligibility Requirements:  The applicant must submit evidence that he or she has lawfully practiced Oriental medicine in another state or foreign country for at least four years.  Foreign graduates must achieve a score of at lest 550 on the TOEFL.

Written Exam:  Examinations in acupuncture and Chinese herbology from a national organization approved by the board.

Practical Exam:  Nevada administers a state practical examination twice per year that includes questions on acupuncture, herbal medicine, basic medical science and jurisprudence.  The test must be taken in English.

Reciprocity/Endorsement:  None.

Medical doctors and osteopaths may practice acupuncture in Nevada if he or she has received "adequate training".  [NOTE:  "Adequate training" has not been defined or legislated.]

Chiropractors may neither practice nor supervise acupuncture.

An "assistant in acupuncture" is restricted in his or her activities to those procedures which a licensed, supervising Doctor of Oriental Medicine may request him or her to do by a written order.  An assistant in acupuncture may not perform any diagnosis of patients or recommend or prescribe any forms of treatment or medication.  An assistant in acupuncture may treat patients only under the direct supervision of a Doctor of Oriental Medicine who is on the same premises where the treatment is to be given.

NOTE:  Look for a physician with formal training in the practice of acupuncture.  Acupuncture and Oriental medicine is an art and a science that takes years to master.  While any licensed physician can stick needles into you, for a positive experience and results, find an acupuncturist with experience treating a similar condition (with acupuncture) to what you have.
