Vermont Laws & Details

Formal Education Requirements:  Completion of a 3 year program in acupuncture and Oriental medicine with a minimum of 1,750 hours of entry-level acupuncture education, including 800 hours of clinical practice, 700 hours of Oriental medicine theory, and 225 hours of biomedical sciences.  The program must be ACAOM accredited or approved by the director of the office.

Training Program:  Applicant may complete a training program in lieu of the above formal education requirements as follows:  A minimum of 40 points in any one of the following categories or combination of catetories: 
     (1)  apprenticeship (10 points for each 1,000 documented contact hours, up to a maximum of 13.5 points per year);
     (2)  completed academic work (5 points for each half-semester [min. of 250 hours] completed with  at least a "C" or passing grade in the field of acupuncture and Oriental medicine, up to a maximum of four periods or 20 points); and
     (3)  self-directed study (10 points for study equivalent to one year of full-time academic work in acupuncture and Oriental medicine, for a maximum of 20 points.)

Undergraduate Requirements:  None.

Other Eligiblity Requirements:  Successful completion of the clean needle technique course offered by the Council of Colleges of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.

Written Exam:  The NCCAOM exam in acupuncture.

Practical Exam:  None.

Reciprocity/Endorsement:  Applicant must be licensed or certified in good standing in another jurisdiction in which the standards and qualifications required for regulation in that district are at least equal to those required by Vermont.

Medical doctors, osteopaths and chiropractors may practice acupuncture in Vermont without any specific training.

NOTE: Look for a physician with formal training in the practice of acupuncture. Acupuncture and Oriental medicine is an art and a science that takes years to master. While any licensed physician can stick needles into you, for a positive experience and results, find an acupuncturist with experience treating a similar condition (with acupuncture) to what you have.
