Editor's Note: Winter Reflections
By: Diane Joswick, L.Ac., MSOM

Plato once said, “…why should we not calmly and patiently review our own thoughts, and thoroughly examine and see what these appearances in us really are?”

According to Chinese medicine, there is no better time for introspection than now. The season with the shortest days of the year and the deepest cold is a time for self reflection. So sit down with a cup of hot tea and write down your inner thoughts, desires and life goals. You can learn more about how winter is viewed from a Chinese medical perspective. Our article (page **) outlines ways to make the most of the season including
food choices and how to prevent a cold.

Is one of your new year’s resolutions to lose those extra pounds? Lee Holden, Qi Gong expert, has a new DVD out showing some Qi Gong exercises targeted towards increasing your metabolism and shrinking your waist line (page 20).

Family Medicine

The main focus this month is the treatment of children with Chinese medicine. As a mother of two small children, I have seen first hand how quickly children respond to acupuncture. Being Yang in nature, children are extremely receptive to acupuncture/acupressure treatments. From ear infections to sprained ankles Chinese medicine can play an important role in children’s healthcare.

Sam Gaines had the opportunity to interview a leading pediatric acupuncturist, Mitch Lehman who discussed the particulars of treating children (page 9). Then we have some great information about the treatment of children with Shonishin, a popular alternative to acupuncture needles (page 17), treating childhood allergies (page 16), eczema (page 18), colic (page 11), and asthma (page 22), from a panel experts in the field of pediatric care.

Andy Rosenfarb takes a holistic look at eye health in his book, Healing Your Eyes with Chinese Medicine. We have a book excerpt for you that discusses the cause of eyesight disorders from a TCM perspective (page 23).

We always like to showcase groups that take acupuncture to those in need. In this issue, Terri Miracle went to the front lines of the wildfires in San Diego, CA to see the groups that were volunteering at Qualcomm stadium. (page 26) We have put a lot of Qi into these pages. I hope you enjoy this magazine as much as we enjoyed putting it together.
