About Mark Whalen, Lic. Ac.

Since the late 20th century, there has been a great deal of scientific research done on acupuncture, much of which proved the efficacy of the treatment on various types of conditions.

Hi, my name is Mark Whelan and I’m a Licensed Acupuncturist in Reading MA and the founder of Five Points Acupuncture & Wellness. I’m also a Board Certified Chinese Herbalist who is passionate about educating people on the benefits of Alternative Medicine to help them get well without the risks and side effects of prescription medication.

If you have any misconceptions about acupuncture, talk to a qualified and experienced acupuncturist who will put your anxieties and doubts about the treatment to rest. Under the skilled hands of a licensed practitioner, acupuncture can be a wonderful healing experience.

I first became interested in acupuncture while I was a patient. Although skeptical at first, I could not argue with the results I experienced. Throughout the course of my treatment, I became fascinated by the traditional Chinese medical approach to health and healing. This fascination became a passion, leading me to change my path and pursue a career in acupuncture.

I graduated from the New England School of Acupuncture in Watertown, MA in 2005 with a Master’s Degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. I am licensed to practice acupuncture by the Massachusetts Board of Medicine. I'm also board certified to practice herbal medicine via the National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM).

While attending the New England School of Acupuncture, I focused my studies on Chinese style acupuncture and Chinese Herbal medicine. I also completed an internship with master herbalist Dr. Tao Xie at the Pathways to Wellness clinic in Boston. I've worked in two of the busiest acupuncture clinics in New England and have gained valuable clinical experience working on a variety of patients and conditions.

You should try acupuncture if you’ve suffered from an ailment you’ve treated with conventional medicine and that approach has not worked nor has answers.

The process itself entails inserting very fine filiform needles into predetermined points on the body and manipulating them in order to relieve pain or generate therapeutic effects. The needles are not painful and the benefits are more than you expected because often times patients find that not only their original complaint has improved, but they also sleep better and have more energy.
