The theme of this issue is summer, and we examine the season from a TCM perspective. According to TCM, the summer months rule the mind (“Secrets of the Dao: Mastering the Mind,” p. 10) and heart (“Summer,” p. 22),as well as the spirit, or “shen” ( “Last Word,” p. 28). Read ahead to stay vibrant, healthy, and in harmony with the season.

On a more serious note, the epidemic of HIV/AIDS continues to spread at an alarming rate. Worldwide, more than 40 million people are living with HIV and AIDS, with no cure in sight. But treatment has made considerable progress, thanks in part to TCM. Oriental medicine can play an important supporting role in the treatment of HIV, as we learn in an excerpt from Misha Cohen’s new book (p. 18). Hear from two patients living with HIV that use TCM to manage their symptoms, and see what they have to say about the impact TCM has on their lives (p. 16). Meet an amazing group of acupuncturists who are teaching “barefoot acupuncture” in Africa to treat symptoms associated with HIV/AIDS, as well as malaria and tuberculosis (p. 26).

Discover how feng shui, which takes the principles of TCM and applies them to the environment, has a role to play in health (p. 24). And enjoy Lee Holden’s demonstration of a great Qi Gong remedy for stress (p. 14).
