Study Finds Moxibustion Enhances Weight Loss

By: Vanessa Vogel Batt L.Ac. MSOM

The 2018 study called "Randomized controlled trial testing weight loss and abdominal obesity outcomes of moxibustion" revealed acupuncture and Oriental medicine contributes to the reduction of waistlines and hips.

Published in Biomedical Engineering Online, the trial consisted of 51 young adult women, all between the age of 21 and 25. Their waist circumferences were at least 80 centimeters or greater.  Patients were divided into either the experimental group or the control group.

The experimental group received moxibustion therapy and watched a weight loss education video every week for 8 weeks. The moxa treatment lasted for 20 minutes. The control group only watched the educational video every other week, for 2 months.

At the end of the trial, researchers concluded that the women in the experimental group saw statistically-significant weight loss benefits when they combined moxibustion treatment with watching the instructional video. The average weight loss for this group was 1.478 kg (3.25 lbs), as compared to the control group with a paltry .038 kg (.08 lbs). The experiment group also sported noteworthy reductions in their waist circumferences and waist-to-hip ratios.
