About Arizona School of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine

At the Arizona School of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine our mission is to prepare competent practitioners of acupuncture and Oriental medicine; men and women of high character and good will, who, by virtue of their work and presence, will lead our profession to be valued, accepted and trusted as efficacious health care.

Our Philosophy

Keeping with the tradition of training Oriental medical practitioners by apprenticeship, we emphasize clinical teaching. From the beginning, we involve students in patient care. Instructors demonstrate their skills by treating patients in the round and present case studies from their experience. We provide students the opportunity to experience several traditional ways of practicing acupuncture and Oriental medicine in order to encourage understanding and respect for different approaches to traditional health care. ASAOM provides clinical services in acupuncture and Oriental medicine to our community of Tucson, Arizona, using our knowledge and personal gifts in response to requests for help, hope and healing.

Our mission is accomplished by effort directed towards graduates meeting the following requirements:

  • Competency in the clinical practice of acupuncture and Oriental medicine, and in possession of tools to continue learning.

  • Well-grounded in the philosophies, theories and diagnostic strategies of Oriental medicine.

  • Knowledgeable about acupuncture channels and points and skilled in acupuncture techniques.

  • Skilled in the assessment and treatment of patients using Asian Bodywork Therapy/Tuina.

  • For students studying herbs, knowledgeable in Chinese herbal lore and skillful in herbal practice.

  • Adept at assessing patients, developing diagnoses and providing appropriate treatment plans, including the use of adjunctive Oriental medicine techniques, with ability to adjust treatments to the individual patient and condition.

  • Conversant in the philosophy and vocabulary of Western medicine and able to communicate with and refer appropriately to other health care practitioners.

  • Professional, compassionate and ethical in behavior with patients and colleagues.

  • Qualified to sit for the NCCAOM certifying examinations in acupuncture, Asian bodywork therapy/tuina and, as appropriate, Chinese herbology.

  • Knowledgeable in business principles needed to open and operate a successful health care practice.

At ASAOM students will learn to practice a full medicine — traditional Chinese thinking and diagnosis along with skill in acupuncture, herbs, and Asian bodywork therapy — the three departments in a traditional Chinese hospital. We teach a full medicine so that when you are in practice you can respond competently and with confidence to whatever concerns people bring in your clinic door. Students will also develop a distinctive competence in Tuina, the Chinese medical massage/hand therapy that has features of American physical therapy, chiropractic and osteopathy. Two years of Tuina training, with supervised clinic, give you the skill, experience, and confidence you need to practice Tuina professionally.

Program Overview

The Arizona School of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine offers professional Master’s degrees in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine and is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine(ACAOM). Graduates of the Master’s Degree programs are eligible to sit for the Acupuncture, Asian Bodywork Therapy, and, as appropriate, Chinese Herbology examinations given by the National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). ASAOM’s Asian Bodywork Therapy Certificate is approved by the Association of Bodywork Therapies of Asia (AOBTA). Graduates of the Master’s Degree programs are eligible for licensing as Acupuncturists in Arizona.

The Master's Degree in Acupuncture (M.Ac.) Program provides the foundational knowledge and skill in Traditional Chinese Medicine needed to pass the national (NCCAOM) acupuncture certifying examination, become licensed in Arizona and many other states, and work competently as a L.Ac. in private practice. The M.Ac. Degree includes the A.B.T./Tuina Certificate course work.

The Master's Degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (M.Ac.O.M.) Program includes all course work from the M.Ac. program, the A.B.T./Tuina Certificate, plus courses and clinic in Chinese herbology. Successful completion of the M.Ac.O.M. program also qualifies the student to sit for the national (NCCAOM) certifying examination in Chinese herbology.

The Certificate in Asian Bodywork Therapy/Tuina (A.B.T. Certificate) is a clinically-oriented program in Chinese structural hand therapy in the tradition of the North American Tang Shou Tao Association.

Except for herbology, M.Ac. and M.Ac.O.M. students follow the same schedule and attend the same classes. Overall, in keeping with the school's clinical emphasis, class work involves hands-on learning in a laboratory setting. Nearly half of TCM hours are done in clinic under the supervision of experienced practitioners, whose objective is to assist interns in developing competence and confidence toward the goal of a successful practice.

ASAOM starts a new class cohort in late September every year. Both full-time and part-time students are welcome. Students are admitted on a first-come, first-served basis. Students are also accepted for early (July) and late (January) enrollment. Applicants must have completed two years (60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits of an accredited college) by the time they matriculate. Prospective ASAOM students are asked to consider that they are participating in a tradition of care giving whose recorded history alone extends 5,000 years into the past, and has been the life work of at least 250 generations of practitioners. Our school, its teachers, students and graduates are a growing tip of a branch of this living tree.

Clinical Externship in China

ASAOM also offers a Clinical Externship in China to third-year students at ASAOM who have completed the requirements for graduation and licensing. Graduates are also welcome to apply. The externship will take place in the provincial TCM hospital in Haikou, capitol of the island province of Hainan, off the Southeast coast of China. Externs will at the clinic, observing and practicing under the direct supervision of the Director of the Acupuncture/Tuina department, who is an adjunct member of ASAOM’s faculty. The China externship is an elective aspect of ASAOM’s curriculum.
