About The Won Institute of Graduate Studies
Ancient Eastern Healing Practices in an American Setting
Academics at the Institute combine rigorous theoretical and technical training with direct, immediate experience and understanding. Our students become adept at fashioning the conceptual content of their coursework into insights into actual physical, mental, and emotional processes; and at translating such processes into effective applications in life and work. Academics are directed toward fulfilling the Institutes's mission.
The mission of the Won Institute of Graduate Studies is to provide quality graduate-level professional education and training in the practical applications of spirituality and the healing arts for the well-being of individuals and society. It is guided by the conviction that meditation is essential to spiritual cultivation, and that spiritual cultivation is necessary to balance material and technological advances.
In the spirit of creating a unique learning environment, our academic community includes students who focus on all aspects of the whole person: mind, body and spirit. Some students are here to become Won Buddhist ministers (kyomu) and spiritual lay leaders. They bring a sense of the importance of spiritual guidance. Some students are here to become teachers and users of meditation. This includes social workers, teachers, psychologists, and other professionals who are here to learn how to apply meditative techniques to their professional practice. Some students are here to become healers. These are students wishing to become acupuncturists, who also realize that meditation is an integral component in the healing process.
The Won Institute of Graduate Studies is an emerging leader of integrative, holistic education in North America. Knowledge and wisdom are innovatively united in the Institute, forming methods of teaching and learning that are fresh, bold, and effective.
Acupuncture Studies Program
The program in Acupuncture leads to a Master of Acupuncture (M. Ac.) degree. The purpose of the Acupuncture program is to prepare professional acupuncture healthcare practitioners who are trained in a broader approach to healing that includes an understanding of mindfulness for both the practitioner and the patient, and that allows the practitioner to focus on the whole-person: body, mind, and spirit. The program incorporates the best of several acupuncture modalities such as Traditional Chinese Medicine, Five Element, Korean Sah-Sang, etc. to better serve the patient.
The mission of the Acupuncture Studies Program is reflected in Goal 4 of the Institute: To educate students to become qualified acupuncture practitioners who are grounded in a holistic model of healing that includes the ability to diagnose and treat patients using diverse acupuncture techniques and traditions, integrated with compassion, spiritual awareness, and an understanding of meditation techniques.
Applicants must have completed six college-level credit hours in Human Anatomy and Physiology and three credit hours in Basic Science in order to become accepted into the Acupuncture program. The courses should be from a college or university recognized by the United States Department of Education. This requirement must be completed by the beginning of the second year Transcripts for the classes must be provided.
