About National University of Health Sciences
National University of Health Sciences (NUHS) is a new entry in the field of acupuncture and oriental medicine and one of only two institutions in the U.S. to combine acupuncture, oriental medicine, naturopathic medicine, and chiropractic medicine on one campus. This blend gives you the unique opportunity to participate in integrated learning situations and develop a collegiality with students in other professions of natural healing. While these professions often compete with each other, you will be able to dialogue with each other, collaborate on research and clinical care opportunities, and develop the skills necessary to work in traditional health care settings.
National University of Health Sciences brings its more than 100-year history of health care education to the field of acupuncture and oriental medicine. Formerly named The National College of Chiropractic, the university was founded in 1906 and has led the chiropractic profession since that time with an emphasis on rigorous science education, broad scope clinical training, and evidence-based treatment modalities.
Now National is transforming its campus into a hub of complementary health care education with the goal of developing, encouraging and promoting collegiality among members of the complementary and alternative professions and allopathic medicine.
Purpose The purpose of the Department of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine at National University is to provide high quality comprehensive and professional education in the Five Branches of Traditional Oriental Medicine: Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine, Tuina, Chinese Nutritional Therapeutics, and Tai Chi/Qi Gong. Through classroom instruction and extensive clinical experience — woven into the early trimesters of the program from the start — we are dedicated to teaching the wisdom of classical acupuncture and oriental medicine as it continues to be enlightened by contemporary medical knowledge.
The programs emphasize an integrative and holistic approach to health care, incorporating instruction in clinical western medicine so that you may practice confidently in a wide range of clinical settings. National is one of the few schools to have its own gross anatomy laboratory and as an AOM student, you will have the distinct advantage of discovering the relationship between anatomical structures, meridians and major acupuncture points through cadaver dissection.
Curriculum
Master of Science in Oriental Medicine This nine-trimester program culminating in the Master of Science in Oriental Medicine (MSOM) provides comprehensive training in the Five Branches of Oriental Medicine. It provides a solid foundation in classical Chinese medical theory and practice, incorporating Eight Principle and Five Element theory as well as modern oriental medical theories and techniques from China, Japan, Korea, France, etc.
The 167.5-credit (3,367.5 hours) program covers the history, theory and philosophy of oriental medicine as well as rigorous training in diagnosis, treatment planning, and the highest standards in the practice of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. You will also graduate with a solid foundation in the basic sciences of western medicine, having developed the skills necessary for integrative and collaborative practice within hospitals and health care settings of your choosing. This comprehensive curriculum combined with extensive and sustained clinical training ensures program success.
Master of Science in Acupuncture The Master of Science in Acupuncture (MSAc) is a 121-credit (2,505 hours), seven-trimester program. You will be immersed in the same comprehensive training as in the Oriental Medicine program, with the exception of the study of Chinese herbal medicine. This program is ideal for health care professionals — chiropractors, nurses, physicians, physical therapists, and others — who wish to study oriental medicine comprehensively but who are not necessarily interested in becoming herbalists at this point. As an MSAc graduate, you may have the option of returning to NUHS to complete the Chinese herbal medicine training at a later date should you choose to do so.
Clinical Training As a National student, you have the unique opportunity to gain clinical exposure early in the curriculum in our extensive on-site health center. National University’s 56,000-square-foot facility provides a full range of patient and client services to Chicago’s west suburban population and also houses the Department of Research and National MRI Center. The clinic has over 40 treatment and examination rooms for the practice of chiropractic and naturopathic medicine and massage therapy. The Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine wing consists of treatment and consultation rooms and a Chinese herbal dispensary.
Faculty The diverse and dynamic faculty at National University of Health Sciences is composed of seasoned, enthusiastic instructors most of whom have the highest degrees in their respective fields.
The discipline of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine at National is headed by Assistant Dean Yihyun Kwon, DC, MSc, MSOM, LAc. Dr. Kwon strongly believes that the integration of eastern and western medicines provides the maximum benefit to patients and to this end, he is working toward a PhD in the combination of eastern and western medicine at Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine.
The director of the Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Clinic at National is Robin Fan, MD (China), LAc. Dr. Fan underwent five years of comprehensive Traditional Chinese Medicine school training in China where she spent several years in education and clinical practice. In addition to teaching at National, Dr. Fan also maintains a private practice.
Location and Facilities National University of Health Sciences claims the best of worlds. The university offers the easy lifestyle of the suburban village of Lombard, Illinois, and the excitement and opportunities of the city of Chicago, just 20 miles east. National’s 32-acre campus is ideally located at the crossroads of several major expressways and offers ample parking and easy access to classroom buildings. The beautifully landscaped grounds include academic structures, dormitory housing, a multi-purpose student center with fitness facility, the clinic building, and the Learning Resource Center, the largest medical library in the area offering bibliographic collections and services tailored to meet the needs of health care students and professionals.
Admission National University of Health Sciences admits new students each January, May and September with evening classes and a flexible schedule so you can tailor your education to fit your life demands.
Students must have earned a baccalaureate degree with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50 (on a 4.00 scale) and are encouraged to take classes in biology, psychology and chemistry prior to admission. These courses serve as an excellent foundation for a medical education at NUHS. If you do not have the required science courses, National has a prerequisite program in which you can meet those requirements in an accelerated format.
The application process includes: an online or paper application; $55 application fee and $225 deposit fee; two character references; an optional essay; and transcripts from all undergraduate institutions attended.
Cost of Study & Financial Aid For the 2007-2008 academic year, tuition is $342 per credit hour. The total credit hours per program are 121 for the MSAc and 167.5 for the MSOM. The Office of Financial Aid at National can help students find the right combination of loans, work-study and scholarship options. Scholarships are available to all qualified students entering the MSAc and MSOM programs.
Accreditation National University has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools to offer the Master of Science Degree Program in Acupuncture and the Master of Science Degree Program in Oriental Medicine. These programs are eligible for accreditation by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM). National University of Health Sciences is currently in the process of seeking ACAOM candidacy for the programs, however this does not confer any status of affiliation with ACAOM (www.acaom.org) at this time. Once National has been approved for candidacy status with ACAOM, students will be able to sit for national board examinations administered by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM).
