About Seattle Institute of Oriental Medicine

The Seattle Institute of Oriental Medicine's statement of purpose grew out of the founders’ belief that education in Oriental medicine is best accomplished in a clinically-based program in which students work in small groups with experienced practitioners. The Seattle Institute fulfills its statement of purpose by offering a single Master's degree program to train practitioners of Oriental medicine. The school is designed to support its purpose in several distinct ways:
  • A maximum of sixteen students are accepted annually to insure a small class setting.

  • Students begin clinical instruction with experienced practitioners in their first trimester to focus on patient care in a clinically-based, apprentice-like experience.

  • Faculty are selected who represent different styles of acupuncture and have extensive experience as practitioners.

  • Competency in accessing information from modern Chinese medical books and journals is supported by three years of coursework aimed at reading medical Chinese.

  • Students are expected to be independent learners with class time being focused on discussions and labs that go beyond the material available in the texts.
Educational Objectives

The school’s educational objectives are measurable traits or qualities we expect students to attain by the time they graduate from the program. These objectives are relatively broad and give general guidance for the development of the curriculum and the measure of its success. The following outcomes are expected of the graduates of the Seattle Institute. The graduate will be:
  • Knowledgeable in different approaches to Oriental medicine and able to access resources in Chinese and English.

  • Skillful in the assessment of patients and the administration of various modalities in the treatment process.

  • Competent in clinical reasoning and able to make appropriate diagnoses and treatment plans.

  • Professional in communication and demeanor with peers and patients.

Master of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine

The SIOM program is three years (36 months) in length with classes and clinic occurring 45 weeks out of the year in three fifteen-week trimesters. Students spend approximately 24 hours per week in clinical training and didactic courses. The courses and clinic are designed to be taken as one cohesive unit; therefore all students are expected to enroll on a full-time basis. In the first year, students work with experienced practitioners to gain their own initial experience with the modalities and healing approaches of Oriental medicine. The course work supports the clinical training by focusing on the skills important for treatment and understanding of the patient's condition. By the end of the first year students acquire basic competence in diagnosis and assessment skills and essential knowledge regarding the primary modalities used in practice. Most importantly, students experience how the theories and modalities of Oriental medicine are integrated and put to use in the clinical setting by experienced practitioners.

In the second and third year, students are responsible for providing care to patients. The academic course work emphasizes clinically relevant topics. Instruction supplements the clinical education by providing the theoretical and technical support necessary for in-depth understanding of the therapy provided. The emphasis on independent research and problem solving in both the clinic and didactic courses provides the students with an environment in which to develop their differential diagnosis and treatment skills. In the third year, students are encouraged to take an increasingly independent role in treatment decisions and in integrating the use of modalities they have learned in the program.
