About New York College of Health Professions
New York College of Health Professions, a non-profit educational institution located in Syosset, NY, has been a Leader in Holistic Care and Education for over 25 years. It was the first school in New York State to have its Massage Therapy and Acupuncture Programs approved by the State Education Department for college degrees. New York College has institutional accreditation by the New York State Board of Regents and the Commissioner of Education, a nationally recognized accrediting agency, as well as programmatic accreditation for its Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Programs from ACAOM.
The College’s educational programs have evolved over years of study and include courses that integrate the methodologies of the East and the West for both preventative and curative health practices. New York College has an out-patient Integrative Health Clinic and Academic Health Care Teaching Clinics in Syosset where all of the students perform their clinical internship. The main campus is located in a modern, spacious 70,000 square foot facility in Syosset, Long Island, New York, about 25 miles from New York City. It can be easily reached by car (the school has free parking) or railroad.

Graduate School of Oriental Medicine:
Acupuncture
The Acupuncture program was approved by the New York State Board of Regents in 1992, the first such program approved in the state. The program was granted Bachelor/Master degree status in 1998. The Acupuncture Program is a 9 trimester curriculum that requires 145 credits and awards a combined Bachelor of Professional Studies/Master of Science (BPS/MS) degree in Acupuncture. The program can be completed in three academic years of full time study. Students have up to six years to complete the program part-time. The curriculum includes 540 hours of clinical training in order to complete the program. Graduates are eligible to sit for the NCCAOM (National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine) Acupuncture certification exam which is required by New York State for Licensure in Acupuncture. This program is accredited by ACAOM (Accrediting Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine).
Oriental Medicine
The Oriental Medicine program was approved by the Board of Regents in 1992, the first such program approved in the state. The program was granted Bachelor/Master degree status in 1998. The Oriental Medicine Program is a 185 credit, 10 trimester curriculum and awards a combined Bachelor of Professional Studies/Master of Science (BPS/MS) degree in Oriental Medicine. Full time, it can be completed in approximately three and one half academic years. Students have up to eight years to complete the program part-time. The curriculum includes 720 hours of clinical training in order to complete the program. Graduates are eligible to sit for the NCCAOM (National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine) certification exams in both Acupuncture which is required by New York State for Licensure in Acupuncture, and the exam in Chinese Herbal Medicine. This program is accredited by ACAOM (Accrediting Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine).
Oriental Medicine Degree for Students with Existing Masters Degree in Acupuncture
This Chinese Herbal Program is a 6 trimester curriculum that requires 47 credits in Herbal classroom and clinical training. This program awards the student a combined Bachelor of Professional Studies/Master of Science (BPS/MS) degree in Oriental Medicine providing the student surrenders his/her Acupuncture degree.
School of Massage Therapy:
Massage Therapy
Started in 1981, New York College’s nationally recognized Massage Therapy Program was its first educational program. In 1996, the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York granted approval to the College to award an Associate of Occupational Studies (AOS) degree with a major in Massage Therapy, the first in the United States. The College currently awards an accredited Associate degree in Massage Therapy that can be completed in five trimesters (20 months) of full-time study or in a 24 or 36 month part time program. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the New York State Licensing Examination in Massage Therapy. They are also eligible to sit for the National Certification Exam for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork, as well as the National Certification Exam in Asian Bodywork Therapy, given by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM).
Advanced Asian Bodywork
The Bachelor of Professional Studies Degree (BPS) program in Advanced Asian Bodywork, is a 124-credit program that can be completed in nine trimesters. It incorporates the AOS course of study as well as in-depth assessment and practical study in Advanced Asian Bodywork Techniques such as Amma, TuiNa and Shiatsu.
Science of Self-Improvement
This 24 credit certificate program is designed to enhance the motivation and job skills of persons seeking initial entry or re-entry into the workforce, as well as to strengthen the retention of employees in occupations with a high rate of attrition. The program is registered by New York State and may be completed on a full-time basis in two trimesters or on a part-time basis over four terms.
Continuing Education:
Holistic Nursing Continuing Education Program
A 16 month, 412.5 clock hour course of study for Registered Nurses designed to lead to the development of a truly holistic nurse. Graduates receive a certificate in Holistic Nursing with Amma massage. The program is approved for Continuing Education Contact Hours by the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA).
Continuing Education Workshops
A range of Continuing Education workshops are offered each trimester designed to meet the needs of working health care professionals as well as the community at large. Review courses for New York State Licensing Examinations and National Certification Exams are also offered on a regular basis in Massage Therapy, Acupuncture and Chinese Herbology.

Faculty:
New York College students study and train with a Faculty whose members are intimately involved in many facets of the College. Student Profile:
The current student body represents a cross section of ages, nationalities, and interests, all sharing a common goal to positively impact the health care system. Students range from college bound high-school graduates to adults looking to change or augment their career. An increasing acceptance of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Complementary care integrated with Western Medicine will continue to enhance career opportunities. A full-time Career Services Office offers assistance in career planning, seminars on setting up your own business, College sponsored Career Fairs and an on-line job registry. The average pass rates on all the modules of the NCCAOM exams of New York College students meet or surpass the national average. Graduates of New York College consistently report that their comprehensive education and training has prepared them to effectively participate in health care activities in the 21st Century.
Facilities:
Located in the suburban community of Syosset, New York, on the north shore of Long Island, the New York College campus is a modern, 70,000 square foot facility designed to be both comfortable and functional for students, faculty, patients and staff. Within the facility are classrooms for all educational programs, Hatha Yoga, Qi Gong and T'ai Chi decks, the Integrative Health Center, the Academic Health Care Teaching Clinics, an Herbal Dispensary, the James and Lenore Jacobson Library, a café and bookstore, student study rooms and lounge, and administrative and faculty offices. Ample free parking and a shuttle from the LIRR station make communicating easy.
Applying:
New York College of Health Professions operates on a trimester basis and accepts new students three times a year: spring (January), summer (May) and fall (September). Additional starting cycles may be added depending on demand. It is recommended that applications be submitted three to four months prior to the students desired entrance date. Applicants are advised that early completion of all application materials and procedures increases their chance of securing a place in the College and their desired schedule. |
