About Tri-State College of Acupuncture

The College
Established in 1979, the Tri-State College of Acupuncture (TSCA) is one of the oldest schools of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in the United States. Recognized internationally as one of the best acupuncture training institutes in the country, TSCA is dedicated to offering comprehensive training in three styles of acupuncture within the context of a broader education in Classical Oriental Medicine.

Programs of Study

Master of Science Degree Program in Acupuncture
TSCA offers a three-academic-year course of study leading to the Master of Science degree in Acupuncture. Placing emphasis on the central role of palpation, or informed touch, in the education of acupuncturists, the College trains students in three principal styles of acupuncture. With the ultimate goal of clinical excellence, our competency-based, experience-driven curriculum is designed to give students maximum hands-on clinical training from the very first class.

Master of Science Degree Program in Oriental Medicine
TSCA offers a four-academic-year course of study leading to the Master of Science degree in Oriental Medicine. This program combines the three-year acupuncture program with a 660-hour course of study in Chinese Herbal Medicine.

Three Styles

1. Traditional Chinese Medicine: Traditional Chinese Medicine is a modern name for the formalized and systematized form of Classical Chinese Medicine developed in the People's Republic of China in the 1960's in order to fit Chinese medicine into a Western style biomedical training paradigm. TCM is a pattern-based approach, in which a patients symptoms are analyzed and, similar to Western medicine, a diagnosis is reached which suggests a specific, standardized treatment approach. The national board exams of the NCCAOM are heavily based on TCM teachings, and as such students at TSCA become well versed in TCM diagnosis and treatment.

2. Acupuncture Physical Medicine (APM): Acupuncture Physical Medicine (APM) is a modern approach to acupuncture developed over the past twenty-five years by TSCA's founder, Mark Seem, Ph.D. Inspired by French and Japanese meridian styles of acupuncture, and the trigger point teachings of Dr. Janet Travell, APM assessment and treatment takes as its basis a patient's actual, physical, lived experience of illness or distress. Rather than a theoretical textbook diagnosis, this acupuncture-energetic perspective focuses on the use of palpation, or informed touch, to seek out myofascial constrictions, which can then be released, allowing the bodymind to restore its natural balance.

3. Kiiko Matsumoto Japanese Style (KM): KM style acupuncture has been developed by renowned Japanese acupuncturist Kiiko Matsumoto over the past two decades in North America. KM style acupuncture utilizes a systematic, easy to learn, palpatory method which is designed to provide instant feedback. When using this system, a KM Style practitioner follows a palpation sequence, which both establishes a diagnosis and suggests several highly effective treatment options. Reflecting her years of study with some of Japan's most influential masters, Kiiko Matsumoto's style embodies a vibrant, dynamic, living Japanese acupuncture tradition.

Student Profile
TSCA has a tremendously diverse student body. The common thread among our students is a strong commitment to the study and practice of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, and to their own personal and professional development. Our students range in age from 24 to 60, with an average age of 37. Approximately 60% are women and 40% are men. Three quarters of our students have a bachelor's degree or higher upon entering, and 50% are already licensed in other healthcare professions. Almost all of our students work, with about half maintaining full-time jobs throughout the program.
