About Traditional Chinese Medical College of Hawaii

The Traditional Chinese Medical College grants the degree Master of Science in Oriental Medicine. This program is unique in restricting class size to no more than 20 students. We offer personal attention from instructors, the opportunity to develop a clientèle in our public clinic, exposure to a variety of Oriental medical healing methods, and a focus, through our Evolution of a Healer series, on exploring, in both theory and practice, the relationship between emotions, illness and healing. Our master’s program provides the theoretical foundation and practical training to support our mission of educating students as healers in the Oriental Medical Tradition.

The Master of Science in Oriental Medicine Degree

Our Oriental Medicine program has evolved into a holistic blend of ancient, traditional and modern perspectives that provide a strong TCM foundation including oriental medical theory and philosophy, Chinese herbology, acupuncture, pulse and tongue diagnosis, dietetics, body work, energetic balancing and other diverse oriental medical traditions and techniques. This is blended with relevant courses in western biomedical sciences, effectively preparing students to be literate in communication and referrals with other healthcare professionals. Our program also contains coursework which fosters greater understanding of the psycho-spiritual and energetic aspects of both illness and healing, inherently supporting the process of students becoming healers. It is our greatest hope that our students will not only become great practitioners capable of treating the imbalances of illness and disease, but will also be prepared as true healers capable of working on any level to which they are called.

A Career in Oriental Medicine

Upon completion of the program, our graduates are qualified to take the National Certification and State Licensure Acupuncture Exams.
In the state of Hawaii, L.Ac.’s can receive payments from Workers' Compensation and from some insurance plans. In increasing numbers, patients are turning to their acupuncturists first for their healthcare needs, considering their TCM practitioner as their family doctor. Our graduates generally open their own practices.

Faculty

Traditional Chinese Medical College of Hawaii is known for the quality of its faculty. They have been chosen for breadth of knowledge and expertise in their fields and for their skill and passion for healing. All regular faculty members are native speakers of English; two elective instructors speak English fluently as a second language.

Our small class size – no more than 20 students per incoming class –
allows for a very high student/faculty ratio; students have as much personal interaction with individual instructors as they need.

Our Community Acupuncture Clinic

The clinic offers TCMCH students the opportunity to diagnose and treat patients under licensed supervision. They use acupuncture, moxa, Chinese herbs, and other TCM modalities. In their second year students observe treatments in clinic and participate in treatment conferences. The third and fourth year students diagnose and treat patients under the direct supervision of the faculty. The clinic’s pharmacy room, stocked with bulk loose herbs and patent medicines, provides students with hands-on experience in Chinese herbology and pharmacology.

Special Elective in Japanese Structural Acupuncture

We offer a special elective in Seitai Shinpo (say-ty shin-poh), a specialized Japanese technique involving both acupuncture and moxibustion which spans all four years and is taken in conjunction with the regular curriculum. It uses the principles of So Tai Ho (soh-ty-hoh) in realigning the pelvic/spinal column so that the distortion is removed and proper posture/health is restored. TCMCH is the only ACAOM-accredited institution at which Seitai Shinpo and the So Tai Ho Japanese body alignment techniques are taught. Instructor Chieko J. Maekawa, Ph.D., D.Ac., L.Ac., Dipl. Ac. apprenticed with Daiichi Sorimachi for three years in Japan. This is an apprentice-style program in which the students work very closely with Dr. Maekawa to learn these very simple yet extremely effective body alignment techniques. Although simple in theory, the practice is exacting and requires much practice and attention to detail to be fully effective.

Admissions Requirements and Financial Aid

The Traditional Chinese Medical College of Hawaii is accredited by the National Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM). Our students are chosen for their ability to complete a rigorous academic program and their commitment to healing. All applicants must have a minimum of 60 semester credits (2 years) or 90 quarter credits of college-level study from a nationally accredited college. Applications are reviewed by the Admissions Committee on a rolling basis for admissions in the Fall. Applicants wishing an Early Admission decision should complete the Application Procedure by March 1 and should request an Early Admission decision.

Contact the college for current tuition and other fee information. Our students are eligible for Federal Title IV Financial Aid.

An Island of Many Climates

Waimea (Kamuela on the map) is located at 2600 feet of elevation, amidst high-plateau ranchland, yet we are a 20 minute drive from some of the most beautiful beaches in the U.S. Half our students live in the local area, and the rest commute from the ‘big city’ of Hilo (pop. 42,000) to the southeast or the small resort town of Kailua-Kona (pop. 10,000) to the southwest. Cultural opportunities cover the range of small town offerings: theatre, bookstores, workshops, farmer’s markets, the Pacific Film Festival, music events and local choirs, and a number of Hawaiian cultural fairs and holidays.

As you may expect, there is an amazing variety of natural phenomena to enjoy: swimming with dolphins, manta rays and sea tortoises, watching a live volcano, tropical hiking paths, world-class astronomy activities at the observatories on Mauna Kea (an extinct volcano and the highest mountain on earth), kayaking for adventurers and calm-water sportsmen, traditional Hawaiian outrigger canoe team competition, parasailing, parasurfing, hang-gliding, sailing, and even a little bit of rock-skiing when we get the occasional heavy snowfall on Mauna Kea.
