About Five Branches Institute
College of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Earn a Professional Master’s Degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Five Branches Institute’s mission is to provide students with a professional medical education in the art, science, and practice of TCM through classroom courses and clinical training. Five Branches offers a 4-year Master’s Degree program in TCM that emphasizes traditional Chinese medical theory, practice and diagnosis, as well as Western medicine as applied to integrated healthcare. The program is balanced with in-depth clinical practice, which comprises one-third of the curriculum.

The Master’s Degree program is taught through the following 8 academic and clinical departments: TCM Theory, TCM Acupuncture, TCM Herbology, TCM Clinical Medicine, TCM Clinical Training, Western Medicine, Complementary Studies, and Advanced Studies and Electives.

Beyond Graduation: A Successful Future as a Primary Healthcare Practitioner

Upon completion of the program, Five Branches graduates are qualified to take the National Certification and State Licensure Acupuncture Exams and practice as Licensed Acupuncturists (L. Ac.). In the state of California, Licensed Acupuncturists can treat patients as primary healthcare providers and can receive Medi-Cal, Worker’s Compensation, and insurance payments for their treatments. In increasing numbers, patients are turning to their Licensed Acupuncturists first for their healthcare needs, considering their TCM practitioner as their family doctor. Licensed Acupuncturists are appreciated and respected by the communities where they live and practice, and they enjoy a rewarding and independent career. Licensed Acupuncturists can open their own practice, or practice in a medical doctor’s office, a hospital, or a complementary healthcare clinic. Five Branches graduates have established successful careers all over the world.

Outstanding Settings – Santa Cruz and San Jose

Santa Cruz
Five Branches Santa Cruz Campus is located one block from Twin Lakes beach by the Santa Cruz harbor. Santa Cruz is renowned for its beautiful beachfront and nearby redwood forests. Santa Cruz is home to both the University of California and Cabrillo College. It has the appeal of a college town, as well as the ambiance of a small coastal California city. The cultural life of Santa Cruz is diverse and progressive. The downtown area has shops of every description and some of the best bookstores in California. Famous for surfing and the boardwalk, Santa Cruz has many activities to enjoy all year-round.

San Jose
In the heart of Silicon Valley, Five Branches Institute is part of a bustling commercial metropolis that is home to major players in the world of technology - HP, Google, Intel, EBay and others. Five Branches is located in one of the tallest buildings in the sophisticated area known as Santana Row. Walking distance of sidewalk cafes and beautiful fountains. Universities in the San Jose area are plentiful, with the most renowned being Stanford. San Jose is a large metropolitan area with many opportunities. The city of San Francisco or the beaches of the Monterey Bay are only a short commute away.

Faculty and Academic Resources

The quality of education at the Five Branches Institute is a reflection of the knowledge, experience and teaching ability of its faculty. The faculty members have been carefully chosen for their excellent knowledge and practice in their particular fields and for their skill and passion for healing. Many are descended from a lineage of TCM masters in China and nearly all have more than 20 years experience practicing and teaching TCM and Western medicine. The faculty members are fluent in English and are experienced, successful teacher-practitioners. Students at the Five Branches Institute appreciate the small class size — typically 20 to 30 students — taught in English, because it permits close contact with the talented faculty. Five Branches College and Clinic are housed in a building with five classrooms, a student lounge, several conference rooms, an extensive library with Internet access, and a modern clinic.

Hands-On Experience in a Thriving TCM Clinic

The Five Branches Clinic assists more than 100 patients a day. The clinic offers Five Branches students the opportunity to observe faculty practitioners diagnosing and treating patients with acupuncture, Chinese herbs, and other TCM modalities. In their last year and a half of studies, students diagnose and treat patients under the direct supervision of the faculty. The clinic’s pharmacy room, stocked with 350 bulk herbs and 200 patent medicines, provides students with hands-on experience in Chinese herbology and pharmacology. Eighteen fully equipped and modern treatment rooms adjoin the pharmacy.

Study in China

Five Branches offers a study abroad program in China in cooperation with the Shanghai TCM University and the Zhejiang (Hangzhou) College of TCM. A Five Branches faculty coordinator accompanies students, graduates, and interested licensed acupuncturists to China and helps to organize all of their hospital training, courses, visas, transportation, and housing. The colleges and hospitals of these leading institutions in China are an excellent place for students to gain intensive hospital training and experience, expand their knowledge, and become senior professionals in TCM.
