The Oregon College of Oriental Medicine is one of the oldest acupuncture and Oriental medicine institutions in the United States. Its program was named a candidate for accreditation by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in 1986. The program was accredited in 1989, and reaccredited in 1994, 1999 and 2004.
In October 2003, OCOM established the first clinical doctoral program in acupuncture and Oriental medicine in the U.S. The doctoral program received candidate status from ACAOM in 2005.
Programs Offered
The Oregon College of Oriental Medicine is a nationally accredited university that trains master's and doctoral students in acupuncture and Oriental medicine. Programs offered at OCOM include acupuncture, Chinese herbs, Oriental therapeutic massage, and qi cultivation.
Master’s Program
OCOM's master's degree program in traditional Oriental medicine is designed to train highly competent health care practitioners and to provide the foundation for ongoing study and development in the field. The program presents coursework and training in all aspects of traditional Oriental medicine, including the theory and practice of acupuncture, herbal medicine, therapeutic massage, nutrition, exercise, and qi cultivation.
Doctoral Program
The clinical Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine degree represents the highest formal educational credential currently available in the field of acupuncture and Oriental medicine in the United States. Only a select few colleges nationwide are authorized to offer this degree, and the students who enroll in these programs represent true pioneers in the profession. OCOM was the first college in the nation to graduate Doctors of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in July of 2005.
About the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine Acupuncture & Herbal Clinic
The college teaching clinic, the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine Acupuncture & Herbal Clinic, offers faculty practice and intern clinics providing affordable health care to an estimated 1,500 patients per month throughout the Portland metropolitan area. The teaching clinic, housed within the college’s 10,000 square foot clinic building (construction was completed in 1997), consists of a full-service, 20-treatment room medical facility and traditional Chinese herbal dispensary. The upper floor of the clinic houses three large classrooms and administrative offices.
Educational Philosophy
Central to OCOM’s educational philosophy is the premise that a thorough understanding of this medical system requires a commitment beyond academic achievement alone. This approach finds its roots within the history of the medicine itself, wherein the training of the health care practitioner included studies designed to support his or her own personal development toward becoming a more present, perceptive and sensitive individual.
Part of the marvelous potential of traditional Oriental medicine - that which makes it truly unique - derives from this personal and internally focused effort. It is this practice that can ultimately lead to the transformation of the practitioner, as well as the patient, and from which develops the ethical framework of the profession as a whole.
OCOM is committed to providing students with a practical foundation in the classical internal development arts for the purposes of energizing clinical skills, supporting personal health and creativity, and providing the groundwork for understanding the fundamental concepts of this medical system. Students will learn that health is a dynamic balance among the physiological, emotional, and psychospiritual aspects of an individual, and that we as individuals exist as inseparable components of an energetic matrix that encompasses all beings and phenomena.
Setting
OCOM is situated on a one-acre campus ten miles east of downtown Portland, Oregon. OCOM’s 8,600-square-foot academic facility, comprised of three classrooms, a library, two student lounges, a conference room and administrative offices, provides an ideal environment for learning and the ongoing exchange of knowledge and ideas. The courtyard and garden provide space for exercise, herb cultivation, study, and school gatherings.
Portland, a city of 540,000 (approximately 1.95 million within the metropolitan area), is heralded by many critics as one of America’s most livable cities. In March of 2006, Prevention magazine chose Portland as the “Top Walking City” in America. Additionally, Men’s Journal recently named Portland as the “Best Place to Live” in the country, noting the city’s perfect combination of adventure, attractiveness, and affordability.
Surrounded by the exhilarating beauty of the Pacific Northwest, Portland boasts an architecturally rich downtown center filled with lively commerce, a burgeoning performing arts scene, diverse neighborhood eateries, one of the most extensive urban park systems in the country, and the largest bookstore in North America.
Just half an hour from the heart of downtown, the magnificent Columbia Gorge offers some of the best hiking, swimming, fishing, canoeing and windsurfing in the country. Mt. Hood provides year-round downhill skiing and an abundance of winter cross-country trails. Eighty miles west of Portland is the rugged Oregon coastline, a favorite weekend retreat for city dwellers.
Natural healing is an integral part of life in Portland - one of the few cities home to a chiropractic college, a naturopathic college, several massage schools, and the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine.
Admission and Financial Aid
OCOM seeks students who show the potential to become caring, dedicated and skilled practitioners of traditional Oriental medicine and who can demonstrate the maturity and preparation necessary to undertake the challenges of the OCOM program. In order to make this assessment, the admissions committee reviews each applicant from a number of perspectives, including academic record and professional and life experiences.
Classes begin once per year in the fall. Students are eligible to apply for subsidized and unsubsidized federal Stafford loans.
