About American Academy of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine
We at the American Academy of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (AAAOM) would like to extend a warm welcome to interested students from across the country. AAAOM is the only independent accredited college of acupuncture and Oriental medicine in Minnesota. At AAAOM, we teach students a perfect combination of medical science, life philosophy and healing art. Our goal is to train health care professionals who will be highly competent, highly skilled and dedicated to the practice of traditional Chinese medicine.
Graduates of our Masters Degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine program acquire a comprehensive theoretical knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine, as well as the practical and technical skills needed to effectively treat patients. Students gain expertise in various modalities of Chinese medicine, including acupuncture, herbal medicine, medical Tuina (therapeutic massage), dietary therapy and Tai Chi/Qi Gong. At the same time, our students receive a thorough grounding in fundamental scientific concepts and biomedicine, emphasizing the integration of Western medicine with traditional healing practices. The program meets the standards required to allow students to successfully take the acupuncture, Chinese herbology, and Oriental medicine diplomate exams of the National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM).
The AAAOM offers a continuing education program available for the advanced student or practitioner who has completed an accredited degree program for Acupuncture and/or Oriental Medicine. It is possible that these courses may qualify for CEU credit but there can be no assurance that this will be the case for all courses offered under this program.
The AAAOM is a truly unique institution; some of our special features include:
Faculty Faculty members at AAAOM include highly skilled doctors of Oriental medicine from China, and doctors of biomedicine who have received training in both Western and Oriental medicine. The Academy’s faculty members, with their strong theoretical background, clinical experience, and technical skills, constitute a very diversified body of knowledge and expertise. The very top-level scholar-doctors from China at AAAOM bring the highest education standard and best practice model to the American students. In 2000, AAAOM faculty was presented with the Best Faculty Award by the TCM World, a New York based national traditional Chinese medicine newspaper.
Library The AAAOM library has a comprehensive collection of books and periodicals on acupuncture and Oriental medicine. We collect every book on acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine published in English. We keep all the leading journals on traditional Chinese medicine from around the world. Our goal is to have the most complete TCM library outside of East Asia.
Student Clinic AAAOM operates a supervised Student clinic that offers acupuncture and herbal medicine services to the general community. Beyond the primary purpose of providing AAAOM students an opportunity to complete a required number of hours of supervised observation and practice, the clinic affords an opportunity for persons curious about acupuncture and herbal medicine to try it at a reasonable price. Patients at the Student clinic are diagnosed and treated by the intern students with the supervising Doctor of Chinese Medicine and have plenty of time to discuss their health concerns or issues with their practitioner.
Post-Graduate Clinic This clinic is organized for group practice for post-graduates from acupuncture or Oriental medicine schools. They are advised and guided by experienced acupuncture/Oriental medicine practitioners as needed. These new practitioners can refine their knowledge and skills and build their confidence in the Post-Graduate Clinic.
Expert Clinic This clinic is created to serve the special needs of practitioners who are confronted with complicated and difficult health conditions. Guest doctors in a variety of specialties are invited from China on a regular basis. The most advanced skills and the most recent developments in acupuncture and other areas of traditional Chinese medicine are brought into the United States through this clinic.
Faculty Clinics Some of the curriculum requirement for clinical observation and hands-on experience is provided by the Faculty Clinics, which has several clinic locations throughout the Twin Cities. All Faculty Clinic locations are staffed by highly-trained doctors of Chinese medicine, and provide students with the opportunity to see how to diagnose and treat a variety of health conditions, including complicated and difficult ones. In 2002, the School Clinic was presented as the Mayo Clinic of Eastern Medicine by the Wellness magazine.
Textbooks All of the textbooks used in AAAOM clinical medicines such as TCM internal medicine, TCM gynecology, TCM dermatology, TCM pediatrics, and TCM orthopedics, are written or selected by AAAOM faculty. The AAAOM staff is currently working on a series of Chinese medicine textbooks which focus on specific areas of theory, technique, and clinical medicine. When completed, these books will comprise a valuable addition to English-language Chinese medicine texts.
Student Body The academic program, clinics, library and other features of AAAOM attract intelligent, accomplished students representing diverse cultures, academic backgrounds and work experiences. Many share linguistic, academic and/or work experience that contributes to a wider learning process for other students and faculty alike. Friendships have been formed among students and faculty. The AAAOM student body is increasingly active, and is currently working toward completion of a student Web site and a formal student association.
