About Tai Sophia Institute

Embark on the Journey of Discovery

Respect for the natural cycles of nature, timeless wisdom of ancient healing traditions and modern science infuse Tai Sophia’s commitment to advancing the integration of healing and healthcare.

Distinct from other schools, Tai Sophia delivers academic excellence with a focus on the interconnection of mind, body, and spirit, an approach that summons transformative personal practice and the development of a healing presence. We invite you to be a learner with us and help create a world that honors our ancestors and serves our children’s children.

Overview

Tai Sophia Institute is a graduate school for the healing arts offering three master degree programs in Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine and Applied Healing Arts. Our training programs draw individuals from around the world who are seeking a unique education based on the timeless wisdom of nature, ancient healing traditions, and modern science. Students in our graduate degree programs are engaged in a cohort learning community with distinguished faculty and renowned guest lecturers.

From a small healing arts clinic founded in 1975, Tai Sophia has grown to become a preeminent academic institution for wellness-based education, clinical care, research, and public policy. Our name Tai Sophia represents the meeting point of the ancient healing traditions from the East and West; the Chinese word Tai means "great" and the Greek word Sophia means "wisdom." Together, the two words – great wisdom—serve as the foundation of our mission and the root of all of our programs and services.

Throughout the past three decades, Tai Sophia's elegant integration of Eastern and Western great wisdom – healing techniques, philosophies, and sciences – has empowered and transformed countless individuals and communities. We have supported healers and leaders to reconnect with nature and its role in healing, to recover the commonsense wisdom of our ancestors, and to learn the art of caring for and serving one another in the course of life's journey.

Academic Programs

Master of Acupuncture

Program Overview

The three-year Master of Acupuncture (M.Ac.) program, beginning either September or January each year, offers a comprehensive curriculum that combines over 2,500 hours of rigorous classroom teaching with rich, clinical experiences.

Our graduates are excellent practitioners with the business knowledge to create a successful practice and the theoretical and philosophical foundation to treat each patient with skill, compassion, and care. The program is steeped in the understanding of the cycles of nature and a cosmology of diverse healing philosophies and traditions.

As a result, students can expect a merging of insight, compassion, and personal growth with practical applications. The Master of Acupuncture program is a journey that is both academically challenging and deeply transformative.

Master of Science in Herbal Medicine

Program Overview

The Herbal Medicine program at Tai Sophia combines current scientific research with centuries of tradition to provide students with a solid knowledge of the philosophy, theory, and practice of herbal medicine for disease prevention and health maintenance.

As individuals increasingly take responsibility for their own healthcare, there is enormous concern by consumers, pharmacists, physicians, and complementary medicine practitioners over issues of use, quality, and cross-effects with mainstream pharmaceuticals and treatments.

The program is designed to serve a critical need for education, research, and information in the field of herbal medicine by training graduates to become practitioners of excellence, leaders in research, and in the production and standards of commercial botanical remedies.

Graduates will:
  • Provide guidance to practitioners, policy makers, academic researchers, and industry leaders concerning the standards of efficacy, quality and safety of herbal products.
  • Contribute to national efforts to promote the professional practice of herbal medicine and increase awareness of the value of herbal medicine and its role in integrative medicine.

  • Provide educational programs for the wider community in the practice of herbal medicine.

  • Conduct studies in developing a body of knowledge that will inform and assist clinicians and consumers in their use of herbal products.

  • Build a bridge between conventional and herbal medicine practitioners.
Program Highlights

The program provides students with a solid familiarity of the foundation of herbal medicine and varied healing traditions. Each student will build a knowledge base of the foundation of several hundred herbs, their traditional usage, the clinical research validating their usage, their dosage as well as known physiological effects and contraindications, toxicity, and possible drug interactions. The program offers:
  • The country’s first Master’s Degree Program in Herbal Medicine, providing students with a comprehensive, in-depth education in understanding the rich history, science, and complexity of herbal medicine.

  • Founded by Simon Mills, co-author of two of the world's leading textbooks on herbal medicine, president of the British Herbal Medicine Association, and secretary of the European Scientific Cooperative on Phytotherapy (ESCOP).

  • Led by Director James Snow with highly experienced and prestigious core faculty, along with distinguished guest lecturers.

  • Over 1000 hours of hands-on clinical training and experience, as well as, extensive training in the preparation and formulation of herbal remedies.

  • An opportunity to collaborate on the Extract database - an international partnership that is creating an academically rigorous and accessible database on herbal medicine for healthcare professionals.

  • A rich 5-day field trip to a nationally renowned plant sanctuary in Ohio.

  • The opportunity to learn about medicinal plants from one of America's leading experts, James A. Duke, Ph.D., at the "Green Farmacy" garden three miles from the Tai Sophia campus.

  • Hands-on experience in the Institute's on-campus herb garden and woodlands.

  • Full access to the outstanding on-site library, which houses James A. Duke's ethnobotanical library as well as extensive resources for research in herbal pharmacology, materia medica, human physiology, and the philosophical foundation of holistic healing.
Professional Opportunities

Graduates are working in medical centers, private consulting practices, and independent clinics as advisors, teachers, consultants, and practitioners.

Graduates have also been presented with many offers to write and teach, and opportunities exist for graduates to work in the herbal product industry. As the public demands more natural remedies, and the media and regulators become more investigative, the need for trained herbal medicine professionals is increasing.

Master of Arts in Applied Healing Arts

Program Overview

This groundbreaking degree program is designed for established and developing healthcare professionals, business executives, educators, lawyers, engineers, and community change agents. Our graduates gain the knowledge and leadership skills necessary to create change and improvement in their personal lives, in the workplace, and in the larger world. As a result, they are equipped with solutions-based models to stimulate healing and creative influences.

This three-year program is delivered in an executive weekend format, offering ease and appeal for professionals in many diverse fields. A hallmark of the program is its transformative nature, which is both life-changing and empowering. Translating the rich philosophies into practice is the key to creating change.

Students are given specific practices during their course work to carry out on a daily basis that serve as a foundation for learning effective transformational skills that can be applied to all aspects of life. Examples of such practices include:

  • Observing: Looking at situations from a completely neutral view to manage situations in a positive and effective way.
  • Shifting to opportunity: Practicing shifting views of a given situation from one of crisis or problem to one of opportunity. Ancient wisdom traditions view crisis and opportunity as two sides of the same coin.

  • Partnership: Engaging others from partnership rather than opposition, including the ability to view any situation or interaction from a larger worldview.

  • Letting go: Letting go of upset (e.g., anger, frustration, fear) in situations or interactions in order to regain the neutral view and move forward in a positive way.

  • Deep listening: Listening to other individuals without judgment and without distraction.
