About Peter Courtnage

Dr. Peter Courtnage brings a rich multidisciplinary background to understanding his patients' presenting conditions. This understanding has evolved during more than 35 years of professional training and clinical practice. Dr. Courtnage's national and international education includes training in massage therapies, Alexander technique, clinical nutrition, clinical psychology, acupuncture, and photobiomodulation (laser acupuncture).

Dr. Courtnage has held clinical and research fellowships through the Humanistic Psychology Institute (3 years), the Harvard Medical School (3 years) and the Tufts School of Medicine (1 year). In addition to his training in oriental medicine, Dr. Courtnage holds a bachelor's degree in psychology and a master's degree in counseling psychology from the University of Oregon, and an interdisciplinary master's degree and a doctorate in clinical psychology from Antioch University.

While a student at the New England School of Acupuncture, Dr. Courtnage apprenticed under Kiiko Matsumoto. Over the ensuing
20 years, he has continued his studies in Japanese acupuncture, including training in toyo hari. Dr. Courtnage has accumulated more than 35,000 hours of clinical experience in the use and application of photobiomodulation (laser acupuncture).

Despite his extensive experience in combining modalities to evoke a balanced state of health, Dr. Courtnage does not want his patients to be dependent upon these modalities for their health. To avoid creating therapeutic dependence, Dr. Courtnage draws upon his understanding of human consciousness, psychoneurophysiology, biophysics, and immunology, to teach his patients how to consciously transform imbalance into balance. Each and every appointment with Dr. Courtnage involves on-going patient education, with the explicit goal that each patient will learn how to balance apparent limitation, pain and disease, and how to self-heal. Homework is guaranteed, and patients are expected to be motivated to transform their apparent limitation.

Dr. Courtnage works with all ages -- infants to 90-year olds, with Olympic athletes to individuals afflicted with chronic degenerative diseases, and with the whole spectrum of acute and chronic pain conditions, as well as mood disorders, anxiety and depression.

Dr. Courtnage is licensed in Alaska both as an acupuncturist and as a clinical psychologist.
