About John Howard
John Howard chose to study acupuncture after suffering from a painful foot injury that would not respond to traditional medical treatments. Even after receiving cortisone shots, he walked with a limp and his pain would not subside. John then tried acupuncture, and was completely pain-free after only four treatments. Inspired by the results, he studied acupuncture at NIH and graduated from the Maryland Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine. He also trained with the Mei Zen Cosmetic Acupuncture System, treating patients who seek weight loss and facial rejuvenation.
John’s medical career began in 1991 when he worked as a medical lab technician in Hollywood, Florida and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He attended Hospital Corpsman School in Chicago, became a certified Combat Medic with the U.S. Marine Corps, and a certified EMT after attending Mid-Florida College. Over the years, John continued his education at the Advanced Lab School, the Army's School 18 Delta Special Operation Medicine, and the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences. John has worked as an ER Trauma Technician at George Washington University Hospital and taught at the medical center as an Assistant Adjunct Professor of Emergency Medicine.
John is now completing a fellowship with Dr. Richard Niemtzow at Andrews Air Force Base. Dr. Niemtzow is a world-renowned acupuncturist, the only full-time active duty acupuncturist in the military, and President of the Maryland Medical Acupuncture Society. Soon John will be assisting Dr. Niemtzow at the Walter Reed Army Hospital treating amputee veterans.
John's specialties include pain management, musculoskeletal and neurological disorders, migraines, respiratory problems, gastrointestinal problems, sports medicine and sports related injuries, ears-nose-eyes-throat conditions, and women's issues, including gynecological and reproductive support. He is a member of Maryland Society of Medical Acupuncturist and Maryland Acupuncture Society. He also has represented the state of Maryland at National Acupuncture Conferences.
