About Caroline Derrickson-Umathum
Pain * Headaches * Infertility * Cancer Support
Caroline Derrickson was a counselor in private practice from 1985 to 1996 in Portland, Oregon. She began her counseling career in the field of addictions and later expanded her practice to include working with individuals, couples, and groups working through dysfunctional family issues, relationships, on-going recovery issues, grief recovery and working with survivors of trauma/sexual abuse.
Believing in the importance of treating the mind/body, returned to school at the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine and received her Master's degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Her integration of counseling, acupuncture, and herbal medicine offers her patients a unique approach to healing, combining physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of the human experience into her treatment approach.
Traditional Chinese Medicine recognizes and teaches that emotional factors can be a strong causative factor in the development of disease and disharmony. Caroline's background in working with clients in this context combined with her acupuncture skills provides her clients with an integrated and unique opportunity for healing.
Cancer Support
Acupuncture has proven effective as an adjunct therapy for cancer patients receiving chemotherapy and/or radiation. At An Shen Wellness Clinic, we treat cancer patients for the side effects often experienced while ongoing treatment for cancer, such as fatigue, nausea, depression, and anxiety.
Acupuncture may also be effective for neuropathies that develop with the use of some chemotherapy drugs. Many insurance companies now pay for acupuncture treatment. If you are undergoing cancer treatment and are experiencing side effects, ask your oncologist about acupuncture or call us to discuss acupuncture treatment.
We currently have a cancer support program that offers discounted rates to cancer patients. Call Caroline Derrickson-Umathum at 360-694-7668 to find out more how acupuncture can help you.
Chinese Herbal Medicine
Chinese Herbal Medicine has been used by the majority of the Chinese population for thousands of years, and even today, herbal medicine is still the most common form of treatment worldwide. Herbs have been proven to be safe and effective when administered correctly, and are a powerful tool in the maintenance of health and the elimination of disease.
Many of the herbs that are commonly used today have at least a 2000-year history; therefore an immense amount of experience has been gained over this time that contributes to their clinical use today.
Modern forms of applying herbal therapies are extract granules or powders and tablets or capsules. At An Shen Wellness Clinic, we use a variety of both powders and patents (tablets). Herbal therapy is used in conjunction with acupuncture to provide complete natural treatment of many conditions.
One example of an area that is well treated with herbal medicine is WOMEN'S REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH. We use formulas for PMS, painful periods, menopause, irregular periods, and infertility to name a few.
Often time patients make an appointment for an herbal consult. To find out if you can be treated with herbal medicine, contact Caroline at 360-694-7668
Women's Reproductive Health
Acupuncture and herbal medicine is an effective treatment for many conditions related to women's reproductive health. Some of the conditions include: PMS, menopause, infertility, irregular periods, and painful periods.
The combination of acupuncture and herbs can smooth out the most troublesome PMS. At An Shen Wellness Clinic, we even have husbands picking up herbs for PMS because they work so well - One husband recently picked up herbs for his wife and called the formula his "breathing pills" When I asked him what he meant, his reply was " When she takes these herbs, I'm able to breath easy!".
Acupuncture and herbs work well together to lessen or eliminate the symptoms associated with menopause such as: hot flashes, nightsweats, anxiety, sleep disturbance and fatigue to name a few.
If you are experiencing any of these conditions, contact An Shen Wellness Clinic at 360-694-7668 to find out more how acupuncture can help you.
