About Courtney O'Brien
- Licensed Acupuncturist - Chinese Herbalist - Oriental Medical Practitioner
Courtney Sung Ill Joo O'Brien, L.Ac. (AZ), Dipl.OM (NCCAOM), is state and nationally board certified to practice Oriental medicine, including acupuncture, herbal medicine, Asian bodywork, nutritional and lifestyle counseling, and gua sha and moxibustion therapy.
Courtney believes that Oriental medicine offers a holistic medical approach to resolving many chronic and acute illnesses and symptoms that create a great deal of longstanding and unnecessary pain. She believes the human body is resilient and capable of healing itself. Her focus is to help facilitate her patients natural healing processes by offering acupuncture and herbal therapy, Asian bodywork or tuina, and lifestyle and nutritional counseling that is unique and specific to each individual. By treating the underlying or root causes of disease and illness, it is her goal to not only decrease the pain levels in her patients but help them to experience sustained and greater health on all levels.
Courtney was born in Seoul, Korea and grew up in Oregon and Ohio before moving to Washington, where she obtained her B.A. in East Asian Studies at The Evergreen State College, Olympia, Washington. She also attended the University of Washington's Jackson School of International Studies, and lived in Kyoto, Japan, where she studied Japanese and Aikido while teaching English to college students. She later received a (M.S.O.M.), a Master's of Science in Oriental medicine from the only locally accredited Oriental medical school, the Phoenix Institute of Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture, (PIHMA).
While living in Seattle, Washington, Courtney experienced a great deal of pain from a head trauma, the result of a serious head-on car accident. After this, she decided to work for a non-profit organization whose goal is to improve health care and medicare coverage. Once she moved to Arizona in 2000, she worked in chiropractic care. All of these experiences gave her a good understanding as well as immense compassion for the types of medical problems that many people suffer from daily.
She believes each patient deserves the highest quality care, resulting in less pain and greater health on all levels: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.
Courtney has been happily married for five years, and she and her husband celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary with the birth of their first child, a healthy, happy baby girl. She enjoys a full life focused on family, health, and natural living.
