Weight Loss Ear Staple – Mississippi Medical Board shuts down Businesses offering Ear Stapling for Losing Weight
The state medical board of Mississippi ordered 14 weight loss businesses that do ear stapling because they say they are doing so illegally.
According to a news report by ABC news, Mal Morgan who is the executive director of the Mississippi Board of Medical Licensure had received several complaints of people that had the ear stapling performed causing serious ear infections. Doctor’s in the state had more people coming in to get the staple removed and to treat the infection.
The ear stapling business advertised this as a weight loss procedure which is why they closed down the businesses as they are practicing medicine without a license. Ear stapling is based loosely on acupuncture and is said to help in losing weight. Mississippi is one of the states that have the highest rates of obesity. According to an interview on ABC news, Morgan said that it was believed that as many as 200 people a day were getting their ears stapled with one of these businesses.
The state of Mississippi requires that in order to perform acupuncture you have to be a doctor that is licensed to do these kinds of procedures. Depending on the state, you may only need a certificate to do acupuncture. Customers are not all happy to see the ear stapling businesses shut down. Customers spend around $50 - $100 to have their ear stapled. They don’t want to see the price skyrocket. Infections can occur and it is important to seek medical treatment as needed.
According to a report by WLBT channel 3 from Jackson Mississippi they reported on success stories from the ear stapling for weight loss. One person interviewed claimed that after being ear stapled they lost 12 pounds in one month. You need to have the staple removed by a professional. So hopefully the closed business will be able to get licensed to help their customers out soon.
